"Religion" in inner-circle talk is the observances and ritual (which I've always hated, and avoided like the plague), and relationship is actually communing, taking one-on-one with your god. I had this personal relationship. But the fact is, when you can no longer play make-believe, all you're left with is a one-sided conversation, realizing that every answer you received was simply your own mind talking to itself. I've since done a lot of study of various religions, and this sort of internalized belief is actually quite common. In fact, it's one of the tools that helped humanity get through its early years, and still helps millions of people today. But it's a crutch, or training wheels if you will. While it can help you through rough times, it also hampers you and limits your thinking and morality to only what is contained within a holy book, to the detriment of humanity.
